Group Initiative and Ropes Course Programs |

Just a few of the words that are often used to describe the Ropes Course experience at Camp Stevens. But words can only give a surface understanding of how you or your group can benefit from the experience. Participants often find that the ropes course is a perfect metaphor, enabling them to look more closely at current issues in their lives. From this insight, new growth can occur, empowering the individual in many ways. The first phase of the two-part program is the Group Initiative phase. The group is presented with a series of problems that must be solved using the skills, attributes and decisions of the group. As they reflect on each problem, individuals learn more about leadership and decision-making skills. These learnings are enhanced as they are applied to the next problem. The Ropes Course phase offers a variety of individual challenges. Just being forty feet from the ground may be challenge enough! But as you work your way across the Burma Bridge, your fear of heights diminishes. Walking on the double or single beam, your sense of commitment grows. Each high element offers a new challenge, pushing you to find new strength. As you rappel down the wall, you feel great about what you have accomplished. Groups are strengthened as members help and encourage each other. You may find that some elements were easy for you but difficult for someone else, and visa versa. The process extends each person's capability for understanding, patience and compassion. The Group Initiative and Ropes Course Programs are offered at Camp Stevens, located at 4200 feet in the mountains of San Diego County. The entire experience is facilitated by the caring, well-trained, and always safety-conscious staff Programs are usually run on a group contract basis. A typical program lasts about eight hours, but may be tailored to fit a variety of needs and timetables, ranging from two-hour workshops to multi-day experiences. Our initiative activities range from activities that require little physical activity but a lot of communication and decision making, to very physical activities that need the same level of cooperation. Activities are chosen based upon the groups desired outcomes and physical abilities. We have three different high ropes courses in two different locations, offering a variety of different experiences depending upon the goals of your group. Some elements are single elements where individuals can choose which they would like to try. Other elements are inter-connected, so you travel from to another in sequence. And even other elements are done with partners, with both of you working together to see what you can do! |
